Myofascial trigger points are “hyperirritable Spots, usually within a taut band of skeletal muscle or the muscle’s fascia” (GEMt course manual) They can cause pain when compressed, and can also refer pain, for example from the neck along the arm.

Traditionally, Physiotherapists would release these using soft tissue massage.

Recently, the profession has embraced the use of musculoskeletal dry needling, to target the trigger point and de-activate or “switch off” the trigger point. This often brings immediate relief and an increased range of movement. For example, if the upper trapezius muscles that run from the shoulder up the side of the neck have trigger points, it can severely restrict the ability to turn the neck from side. This can make it difficult to drive a car and reverse or check the blind spot. Trigger point dry needling can often free this up considerably.

All our Physiotherapists have completed additional courses and are qualified to use Trigger point dry needling as part of their treatment.
